Advanced Design and Building
The Project Outline
The Higher Qualifications Pathway Project will enable the Advanced Design and Building team to use e-portfolios as a tool for the repository evidence for competence which will then be a “marketable” resource for advancement into industry and/or Higher Education.
E-portfolios provide an easily transportable body of evidence that assists in further education applications and/or employment opportunities.
The Gordon TAFE’s Advanced Design and Building department aims to provide flexible delivery and assessment options for the Diploma of Building Construction.
Students will be required to develop an e-portfolio which will be used as evidence of competence within the Diploma of Building Construction.
The e-portfolio will aim to replicate the industry standards of presentation and content.Completion of the Diploma of Building Construction offers pathways into industry at management level and to Bachelor of Construction Management (Deakin)

Update - End of term 1
The students are well into the unit content and have been using the eportfolio established.
There have been some problems:
Solutions:
There are some students that just love this way of presenting their tasks and some that would prefer to just email their tasks.
I must applaud and thank Wayne Ketchen, the teacher, for seeing the value in this way of presenting student work and his vision for where students can go with eportfolios.

There have been some problems:
- the content of this unit is HUGE!! to say the least.. and so some students have found having to focus on learning how the eportfolio works has taken a back seat.
- they are concerned at the clunkiness of the program
- the time lag between touching base with their eportfolio means some have forgotten how to use it.
Solutions:
- I will be available for an hour each Wednesday morning in Term 2 to assist
- simple "how to" docs will be developed - these exist but I will generate some that show the specific relevant screeen captures
- the eports will only be used for assessment at this stage

March 22 update
Our students are working on their eportfolios but some are having issues - so I will be going to the class next Tues (27 March) to assist them and answer any queries they may have.
Wayne - the teacher - is using the eportfolio as the students' only space for their online component and for their uploading of assessemnts etc.
We are also still waiting to hear from Deakin regarding a meeting with them - Noel will follow up on this asap.
Sue and Noel will presenting on the use of eportfolios at the Vista conference in May.

Deakin contacts
We are fortunate to have a great working relationship with Gerald Brennan, Manager TAFE Partnerships, Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International & Development) at Deakin University.
He will assist us in the articulation strategies for this project. He is also available to advise on suitable study areas that may present opportunities for The Gordon. The knowledge gained in this project will be transferrable.
We look forward to working with Gerald.
We will also be meeting with James Coulson, Deputy Head, School of Architecture & Building. Once this meeting is locked down we will be able to report on the outcomes.

Rather than have 2 eportfolios - Noel and I will be updating one and also working on adding information to this blog. This will make it easier for you all to find the information that is applicable to our project.

The Project begins...
It's exciting to have been successful in gaining funding for the Higher Qualification Pathways Project. The selection process was very competitive with 78 applications vying for 8 funding places and it was great to meet those that had come from all over Australia.
We met at Induction Workshop on Monday 30 January in DFEEST offices in Adelaide.
We now have access to the Mahara e-Skills site and will all begin to share and build a great repository of knowledge.
Noel and I look forward to the networking and connectivity that will undoubtedly be a result of this adventure.
