The Project Outline

The Higher Qualifications Pathway Project will enable the Advanced Design and Building team to use e-portfolios as a tool for the repository evidence for competence which will then be a “marketable” resource for advancement into industry and/or Higher Education.

E-portfolios provide an easily transportable body of evidence that assists in further education applications and/or employment opportunities.

The Gordon TAFE’s Advanced Design and Building department aims to provide flexible delivery and assessment options for the Diploma of Building Construction.

Students will be required to develop an e-portfolio which will be used as evidence of competence within the Diploma of Building Construction.

The e-portfolio will aim to replicate the industry standards of presentation and content.Completion of the Diploma of Building Construction offers pathways into industry at management level and to Bachelor of Construction Management (Deakin)

Update - End of term 1

The students are well into the unit content and have been using the eportfolio established.

There have been some problems:

  • the content of this unit is HUGE!! to say the least.. and so some students have found having to focus on learning how the eportfolio works has taken a back seat.

  • they are concerned at the clunkiness of the program

  • the time lag between touching base with their eportfolio means some have forgotten how to use it.

Solutions:

  • I will be available for an hour each Wednesday morning in Term 2 to assist

  • simple "how to" docs will be developed - these exist but I will generate some that show the specific relevant screeen captures

  • the eports will only be used for assessment at this stage

There are some students that just love this way of presenting their tasks and some that would prefer to just email their tasks.

I must applaud and thank Wayne Ketchen, the teacher, for seeing the value in this way of presenting student work and his vision for where students can go with eportfolios.
